On My Easel – Namibian Sunset – 16 Feb 2020

Art By Bruce - Namibia 4

Sometime last year I spotted a beautiful photograph of a Namibian sunset, complete with what looks like a Toyota Landcruiser coming up the hill towards the photographer. I obtained the permission of the photographer to use the image as reference.

It’s a long way from finished and it is the biggest painting I’ve tackled. It measures 900 mm x 600 mm.

On My Easel – Anahita Golf Course 8th Hole – 16th January 2020

Art By Bruce - Anahita

This Work is a commission for a client in Saigon, Vietnam.

The Anahita Golf and Spa Resort is on the East Coast of Mauritius. It covers over 210 Hectares of Tropical coastline and includes two 18 hole golf courses designed by German Golfer Bernhard Langer and our very own Ernie Els.

Following my Anahita 4th which was sold in 2019 I received a commission from a buyer in Saigon, Vietnam. He has asked for an oil painting of the 8th hole looking towards the green from behind the tee.

I was also given a picture of where the finished piece will hang. A really special client.

On My Easel – Steam Train – 11 th Jan 2020

Art By Bruce - Steam Train

The grand age of steam has long passed as by. All that remains of the steam train era are mainly those engines and train sets maintained and run by private individuals and companies who have a real passion for steam and the skills and financial resources to restore renovate and maintain these monsters.

On the other hand, here in South Africa it may be a plan to reintroduce steam engines in view of our constant power outages caused by poor maintenance, cable theft and load-shedding.
Just Imagine, we could get Eskom to send their alleged wet coal to Transnet!

I read somewhere that if you want to be a great artist you need to be constantly drawing, even when you’re not painting. I’m sure that is true as drawing is reasonably fast, easy to amend and relatively cheap. As the South African Golfer – Gary Player used to say “The more I practice the luckier I get” so it is with art.

Drawing for its own sake hones your skills so that when you come to painting you’re likely to have a better foundation and less mistakes in your creations.

“Steam Train” will be one of many such creations in my studio during 2020.

I have recently completed a small oil painting – 1937 Chevrolet Coupe.

Some time ago I completed Old Blue, which is two old tractors outside the world famous Sandstone Estates Steam Heritage Farm outside Ficksburg in the Eastern Free State. It is a full working commercial farm with a wonderful working museum of steam driven equipment, old cars, farming equipment, planes and more. Lovely place to include in a holiday or long weekend.

Also on my easel, or more accurately, waiting it’s turn to be back on my easel, is Jessica. She is a restored steam locomotive owned and operated by the Ceres Rail Company in the Western Cape.

The Cat and The Guinea Fowl

Art By Bruce - The Cat and The Guinea Fowl

Hidden in this Oil on Canvas Sheet you will find the cat and the guinea fowl.
The painting is on 265 gsm canvas measuring 228 mm x 305 mm or 9 in x 12 in.
Its fairly bright and will work in a confined space, in the loo or in a study.
Wherever it hangs it will elicit comment – probably something like
“I wonder what the artist was smoking”
or
“Perhaps the artist will tell us where he gets his good stuff”

1950 Chevrolet Deluxe – completed

Art By Bruce - 1950 Chevrolet Deluxe

Anther car completed today. The reference pic comes from Joshua Morey of Bakersville, North Carolina USA. He had just bought the car in 2019 when he published the pic on FB. All original with 88,000 miles (140,000) km on the clock.
Joshua is co-owner of Grumpy’s Conversions in Bakersville.

This piece was originally earmarked for a close up painting of a gooseberry. Unfortunately I ate the subject. That wouldn’t have been so bad but it was the last gooseberry of the season and then the drought of 2016/2017 in the Western Cape wiped out the next crop. That’s why there’s a white oval in the centre of the panel!
The canvas was later pulled out to become a two door 1950 Chevrolet de Luxe.

On my easel – Just an old Ford – 9th January 2020

Art By Bruce - Just an Old Ford

This 1933 Ford is my impression of one that was recently offered for sale in California on behalf of the owner from Clinton, Michigan. The actual car is a little lower and longer than this piece. It is, what was commonly known in the 1930’s, a sedan delivery. Based on the 1933 car it had a longer chassis and suicide doors.

These are the images from the first post On My Easel – 14th October 2019 and a follow up post – 19th November 2019. What’s happened is that the colour of the car has changed and I’m trying something different with the background. Still a long way to go.

1937 Chevrolet Coupe – complete and available

Art By Bruce - 1937 Chevrolet Coupe

The 1937 Chevrolet Coupe is finally complete. I really enjoyed doing this old rust bucket with it’s patina, rusty wheel rims and broken door handle. Painting old cars is a lot cheaper than restoring them to their former glory or turning them into hot rods or “gassers”.

Here are some photos taken during the process.

It is an oil painting on a canvas panel measuring 152 x 203 mm or 6 x 8 inches.

Tomorrow it will be sealed and will be ready for shipping by 20th January 2020.

Some other small motor vehicle paintings currently nearing completion include a blue 1950 Chevrolet de Luxe, a 1952 Blue and Orange Chevrolet de Luxe, a 1933 Ford Sedan Delivery and a 1947/1948 Pontiac Silver Streak.

On My Easel – 6 old cars

Artbybruce.co.za 1937 Chev Coupe

Each one of these small oil paintings have their own specific set of challenges. Deciding what to do with the background poses another set of challenges. They are quite small – 200 mm x 150 mm canvas panels so it’s extremely difficult to get the detail right. You are, after all, scaling a 5 meter long vehicle down to 20 cm.

Of course, the older one gets the less stable the hand and less focused the eyes. Which reinforces my contention that buying old artist’s work is a wise move. It’s like ly to go up in value sooner rather than later.

All six are in various stages of completion and they will be finished off in a short while, but first I’m off to visit a Pecan Nut farm for a week.
