On My Easel – 1936 Cord Westchester – 18 Oct 2019

Art By Bruce - 1936 Cord Westchester

The Cord marque only existed from late 1929 to 1937 but in that short space of time they designed some fabulous vehicles and introduced a host of innovations to motoring. Probably the most famous of the Cords were the 1936 and 1937 models. The model featured in this oil painting is a 1936 Westchester.

It’s an oil painting on a canvas panel measuring 148 mm x 210 mm (6 in X 8 in). It forms part of a series which includes a 1933 Ford Sedan DeliveryJust an old Ford1950 Chevrolet Deluxe1937 Chevrolet Coupe1947/48 Pontiac Silver Streak, and the 1936 Cord Westchester .

On My Easel – Grandpa’s Chev – 19 Oct 2019

Art By Bruce - 1950 Chevrolet Deluxe - Grandpa's Chev

I recently read about a young chap who inherited his Grandpa’s 1950’s Chev. He is busy restoring the old car but it’s a race against time. His Gran has a few months to live and he wants to take the old lady for one last drive. Here’s hoping he gets it finished in time.

This is my interpretation of how the car will look when its complete. It’s an oil painting on a canvas panel measuring 148 mm x 210 mm (6 in X 8 in). It forms part of a series which includes a 1933 Ford Sedan Delivery, Just an old Ford, 1950 Chevrolet Deluxe, 1937 Chevrolet Coupe, 1947/48 Pontiac Silver Streak, and 1937 Cord Westchester .

On my easel – Just an old Ford – 14th Oct 2019

This 1933 Ford is my impression of one that was recently offered for sale in California on behalf of the owner from Clinton, Michigan. The actual car is a little lower and longer than this piece. It is, what was commonly known in the 1930’s, a sedan delivery. Based on the 1933 car it had a longer chassis and suicide doors.

This is a small oil on canvas panel measuring 148 mm x 210 mm (6 inches x 8 inches) and forms part of a series including a 1937 Chevrolet Coupe, a 1933 Ford Sedan Delivery, a 1950 Chevrolet deluxe, a 1936 Cord Westchester, a 1947/48 Pontiac Silver Streak and Grandpa’s Chev.

On My Easel – Fishing Boats at Kassiesbaai – 12th October 2019

Boats at Arniston

About 20km north-east of Cape Agulhas is the holiday village of Arniston, which is alongside the historical fishing village of Kassiesbaai. There is a small “harbour” for the fishing boats owned and managed by the locals. Out of season, in bad weather and when the fish aren’t biting there are always four or five of these tiny seagoing vessels sitting on the concrete slipway.

Kassiesbaai has a long history, some of which may be unverifiable, but it makes interesting reading on Google. if you go to Google maps with these co-ordinates you will be directed to the little harbour. -34.666381,20.231924

This piece is multi-media on canvas. I used acrylics, soft pastels, charcoal, Pigma archival ink brushes, unipin water and fade proof pigment ink covered with a fixative and soon to be varnished. My first attempt at a multimedia piece using exactly the same media turned out a complete disaster. It makes for an interesting photograph but in reality it’s just a big black blob! It became the first piece i tossed in the waste bin.

Other pieces that may interest you are Boat at Paternoster and After the drought

SOLD – Friday Afternoon

A lady by the name of Julie Duell is an American artist who has, for years, added her ideas and tips to her blog, for aspiring and experienced agents alike. When I was getting to grips with the real issues of perspective I found her site and followed her techniques. I then set about painting my interpretation of her interpretation! This acrylic on a canvas panel measures 152 x 203 mm or 6 x 8 inches. It is framed.

I love the softness of the Friday Afternoon painting. The painting seems to be of a calm environment, maybe somewhere in Tuscany or the south of France. The two ladies talking have been to the fresh produce market for tonight’s al fresco supper. There in the distance is the village church looking out on to the square which is obscured by the buildings down the left.

You may prefer something like Kiss Me Kate I or Old Rusty which are both street scenes, or you could

SOLD – Uber Taxi in the Great Karoo

Our farm in what is known as the Upper Karoo is 55 km from the nearest town (Douglas) and 71 km from the town in the other direction (Prieska). Karoo farms that are not on the Orange river are almost all sheep farms. It is a lonely life in the Karoo. It is so vast, so still, and so very hot in summer and icy cold when the winds blow in winter. To most, the Karoo is an area you just drive through on your way to more attractive destinations. To the few that know, there is no more peaceful place on earth than here, in the Great Karoo.

How does one then get around if you are unfortunate enough not to own a motor vehicle?
You use Uber Cart!
Unlike in the city you don’t use a mobile to book your ride and then jump into the Uber that magically appears in front of you.
No, you send a message to someone with a donkey cart. You explain where you wish to go and more or less when you want to go. But the cart arrives when the cart arrives and you go when the driver is good and ready to go.
To be good and ready to go one has to enquire as to everyone’s welfare, take refreshment, discuss the weather and tell of events since last meeting. Then you will be ready to set out. Except, of course, you have to get the donkey to co-operate, which can have its own particular challenges.

Heart and Soul and a little bit more went into this Acrylic painting of a donkey cart on the farm Kwartelspan. It is on a canvas panel measuring 305 x 406 mm or 12 x 16 inches.

Similar pieces that may be of interest would be Boat at Paternoster and Shepherds Hut.
