On a Farm in South Africa
About 120 km South East of Cape Town is the town of Caledon. In the heart of the “Overberg” region, famous for its wheat, canola, sheep and mountain fynbos. This oil painting is of a now disused shepherd’s hut on the farm Vaalplaas. Shepherd’s huts were common in the days prior to tarred roads and the widespread use of light delivery vehicles. This particular hut is on the gravel road to Tesselaarsdal, a small settlement some 28 km from Caledon. The farm’s name is “Vaalplaas”, loosely translated as “Dull Farm” which in winter is far from the truth, with the greens, yellow and creamy browns of Grain and canola crops. Size 40 cm x 40 cm x 2 cm.
